Explore North Greenland – the land up north

Explore North Greenland – a region where Greenland’s story comes alive through archaeology, living Inuit culture, and the country’s most iconic attraction, the Ilulissat Icefjord.

The pretour starts in Ilulissat, the main transport hub of the north and Greenland’s leading tourism town, where around 5,000 people live alongside a strong fishing industry, two fish factories, a growing tourism sector, and countless sled dogs that define winter life. Known as the town of halibut, Ilulissat offers unforgettable landscapes, authentic local culture, and the chance to taste one of Greenland’s most famous flavours – halibut.

Deviation / Please Note

In case of weather disruptions, alternative indoor cultural experiences and adjusted plans are in place. In September, North Greenland often offers beautiful sunsets, crisp evenings, and dry, clear air. Weather conditions in Ilulissat can change quickly, so experiences are planned with flexibility and checked daily, as conditions may shift from strong winds to bright sunny days with vivid Arctic colours.

Tour description and schedule

On the first day, the programme begins with a guided city walk in Ilulissat with Ilulissat Event, offering an introduction to the town and its local life. In the evening, Ilulissat Event hosts an Icefjord sailing experience, where guests can experience the sea and encounter the spectacular icebergs that define the area.

On the second day, Unique Tours takes guests on a full-day excursion to the Eqi Glacier, giving a deeper sense of North Greenland’s dramatic coastal landscapes and glacier scenery.

On the third day, the programme combines experiences from air, land, and sea. AirZafari offers an iceberg flightseeing tour, while Dogsled and Ice Academy invites guests on a hike with sled dogs. Around lunch time, we head out to Icefiord Center, and eat lunch first and the experience The Icefiord centre, that opened the story of ice in 2021.

Later, guests enjoy a complimentary dinner at Hotel Icefiord before heading out with Authentic Greenland for a midnight Icefjord sailing.

On the fourth day, the focus shifts to wildlife, settlement life, and local flavours. Diskoline offers a whale safari, followed by a Rodebay tour with Authentic Greenland. During the evening, take part in a food tasting experience with Explore Ilulissat.

On the fifth day, AirZafari presents a flightseeing tour over the northern glacier and outer Icefjord. Dogsled and Ice Academy hosts a fishing tour, followed by a local kaffemik at Ilulissat Dogsledge Tours. Later, Unique Tours offers an Icefjord tour, and the day concludes with a complimentary dinner at Hotel Hvide Falk.

What to wear

Greenland’s weather is unpredictable and can shift with no notice, especially during autumn. Wear good and warm clothes on the sailing trips, as we will be at the ocean, especially mittens, a warm jacket and warm leggings inside pants and hat/beanie/wooly head wrap. During hikings wear some gore tex pants and a light jacket, some gloves and a hat and hiking shoes are a great idea, since it’s on rough terrain.

What to bring

Layers of clothes - Preferably wool and not cotton for the sailing trips and warm jacket and overalls. If you are going hiking, have gore tex pants and a light jacket on. For shoes you can also bring hiking shoes. But if you only go on the board walk, some sport shoes are fine, but watch out for some wet spots. Wooly socks are also a must and a scarf and a hat/wooly beanie or head wrap. Sunscreen and sunglasses, there is still sun during those days and the sun is very harsh on the skin and the ocean do in fact reflect back the sunny rays.
