Practical information

Entry to Greenland

Travellers are advised to ensure that they have the necessary permits to enter Greenland, whether travelling via Denmark or Iceland. Entry requirements depend on nationality.

A full list of countries requiring a visa can be found at: newtodenmark.dk.

In general, citizens of Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and most Western European and Scandinavian countries do not require a visa for short stays in Greenland.

Please note that travelers who require a Schengen visa to enter Europe must apply for a specific visa valid for Greenland. A standard Schengen visa is not automatically valid for entry to Greenland.

It is recommended that visa requirements are checked well in advance of travel, read more about it here.

What to wear in Greenland

Greenland is located in the Arctic, and weather conditions can change rapidly.

Visitors are advised to follow the layering principle throughout the year. Wearing multiple lightweight layers makes it possible to adjust clothing according to changing temperatures and weather conditions.

September temperatures can be mild and pleasant; however, conditions may vary significantly during the day. Visitors should be prepared for:

  • Sudden temperature changes
  • Wind
  • Rain

Recommended clothing includes:

  • Windproof and waterproof outer layers
  • Warm mid-layers such as fleece or wool
  • Comfortable and sturdy footwear
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen

Being prepared for varying weather conditions ensures a more comfortable experience.

See this video for how to dress for weather in Greenland.

Safety
  • Greenland’s Arctic environment requires awareness and preparation, particularly when participating in outdoor activities.
  • Weather conditions can change quickly, and participants are advised to follow instructions from local guides at all times.
  • All organised excursions are conducted with experienced guides who are familiar with local terrain and conditions.
  • Comprehensive travel insurance, including emergency coverage and evacuation, is strongly recommended.
