About Nuuk

Welcome to Nuuk

Nuuk is Greenland’s capital, a city shaped by the fjord and the rhythm of life in the Arctic. Colourful neighbourhoods stretch between mountains and sea, where daily life follows the rhythm of light, wind, and the tide. From the harbour, it is easy to see how closely the city lives with nature, even in the busy schedules of everyday life.

The fjord system of Nuup Kangerlua (the Nuuk Fjord system) covers around 9,000 square kilometres and is a vast landscape of waterways, islands, and peaks stretching far inland. It has been a place for travel, hunting, and settlement for centuries. When you head into the fjord by boat, the city quickly disappears behind you, replaced by silence, scale, and open space.

Culture at the City’s Heart
Nuuk is where Greenland gathers and where Greenland’s creative life thrives. In the city centre, Katuaq Cultural Centre sets the pulse with concerts, films, exhibitions, and events. Nearby, museums, cafés, restaurants, and design shops make it easy to spend an afternoon following curiosity rather than a schedule.

Nature in Every Direction
In Nuuk, the outdoors is part of everyday life. Short hikes start close to town, and the views open quickly: Sermitsiaq, the fjord, the coastline. In winter, the sky often puts on its own programme and the best northern lights season in Nuuk runs from September to April. In summer, the days stretch long; and darkness can feel like it never fully arrives.
