Tour description and schedule
The journey begins in Akureyri, heading along Route 1 toward Sauðárkrókur through the historic landscape of the Sturlunga Era, a pivotal and dramatic period in Icelandic history.
Along the way, the guide focuses on cultural and historical storytelling, exploring how the landscape has shaped the culture of the region. The route passes through areas such as Hraun in Öxnadalur, Kotárgil and Bólugil, associated with the legendary troll woman Bóla and the poet Bólu-Hjálmar.
The tour continues past Örlygsstaðir and the church at Miklabær, tied to the haunting tale of Solveig from Miklabær, before reaching Glaumbær turf farm, a site connected to Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir, Sigurður the painter, and the Icelandic national costume. A visit to the 1238: Battle of Iceland exhibition includes a guided tour and general introduction.
The return journey takes a scenic route through Hegranes and Blönduhlíð, with stops that highlight the cultural and historical significance of sites such as Hegranesþing, linked to Grettir the Strong, with views toward Drangey island. The route also passes Flugumýri, Haugsnes, the Kakalaskáli exhibition center, and the impressive Hraundrangar peaks, especially striking from this direction.
