Destination *Austurland welcomes you all year round, characterized by small villages, dramatic coastlines, narrow fjords, broad valleys, rugged highlands, steep mountains and more waterfalls than one can count. *Austurland is known for its creativity, local cuisine, cultural complexion and friendly spirit.

22 September
You fly from the capital Reykjavík, and you land in Egilsstaðir, the regional airport for Austurland, almost situated in the middle of a grassy field.  Once you exit the airport, we are ready to drive with you to Stuðlagil Canyon, one of Austurlands most visited places.  The drive takes about an hour, and the round trip hike about 3 hours. Quite an easy hike, but prepare yourself for a sample of all weather conditions.

After a nice hike, we drive back to Egilsstaðir.  Vök Baths is our next destination where you can fully immerse yourself in the country’s first series of floating geothermal pools on the beautiful Lake Urriðavatn. Additionally, there are two on-shore hot pools, an outdoor pool bar as well as a steam bath and cold tunnel equipped with a mist shower inside. Before we drive to the fjords appetizers will be served at Vök Bistro along with Vökvi and Vaka beers specially brewed using the hot water from Lake Urriðavatn. Vökvi is the Icelandic word for ‘liquid’. It’s a delicious 4,5% Blond Kellerbier made partially from locally grown barley from Vallanes. Vaka is a 4,5% Session IPA, dry hopped with locally grown Lemon Balm from Vallanes. It’s name comes from the plural for Vök, Vakir. Fully embrace the geothermal power of Iceland at our Tea bar and sample our selection of tisanes (teas) made from locally sourced herbs and brewed with hot spring water from the lake.

Dinner will be served at the restaurant in Randulffs sea-house, a beautifully preserved shore building. Today this fine old house preserves both many artefacts and a lingering atmosphere from the days when the establishment of a herring fishery led to the first real growth of the fiord towns of East Iceland in the late 19th and early 20th century. The accommodation is in Eskifjörður, in cabins at the uniquely situated peninsula Mjoeyri, with a view over the fjord and the mountain Hólmatindur.

In Mjoeyri, you have the opportunity to dip yourself in a hot tub boat, either before you go to sleep, possibly with northern lights over your heads, or early in the morning, watching the dawn.

23 September
After breakfast, we drive to the Wilderness Center, an authentic and peaceful hideaway located right by the edge of Northern Europe’s most extensive wilderness. Experience a visually stunning exhibition where you can walk into the adventures of the Icelandic wilderness and be touched by the dramatic struggle between the forces of nature and the Icelander´s fight to survive.  At the Wilderness Center you will get light refreshments before heading back to Egilsstaðir, checking in for your flight at 14:40, flying to Reykavík at 15:40.

Where we will stop

  • Rjúkandi Waterfall
  • Stuðlagil Canyon
  • Vök Baths
  • Randulffs sea-house
  • Mjoeyri cabins
  • Wilderness center

What you will see along away (weather permitting):

  • Icelandic Highlands from the plane
  • Glacier river Canyon
  • Lagarfljót lake
  • Bleiksárfoss Waterfall
  • Hólmanes Peninsula
  • Hólmatindur Mountain
  • Hengifoss Waterfall
  • Hallormsstaður Forest
